What happens after you get in touch

Floor plan and drop count

Send me the floor plan or walk me through the space. I count the drops, plan the pathways and confirm where the IT room goes and what needs to be in it. You get a written scope and a quote.

Rough-in with the contractor

Once framing is up and before drywall, my team and I pull the Cat6 from the IT room to every drop, following the electrician's schedule and the contractor's inspections. Renovations of finished space use existing ceilings and pathways.

Termination, testing and the IT room

After paint, I terminate the jacks and patch panel, test every run, label everything and build out the rack: switch, firewall, power and access points. Internet is connected when the provider installs the circuit.

Move-in and support

Workstations, phones and printers are patched in and checked. You get the test results and the drop schedule. If you want the same company supporting the network from then on, with me still your contact, managed IT picks up where the cabling ends.

Who runs network cabling for a small office in Dallas?

One of two kinds of company: a low-voltage contractor hired by the general contractor, or the IT company that will support the office afterwards. I am the second kind. I am Anthony Omini, and through Cross River Tech I run Cat6 data cabling for new commercial construction and renovations across Dallas County and the near metroplex, from Downtown and Uptown office buildings to Deep Ellum, the Design District, North Dallas and suburbs such as Plano, Richardson, Addison, Irving and Carrollton. Then, if you want, I stay on as your contact and my team and I support the network I built.

That arrangement causes the fewest problems on a small build-out. When the cabling and the IT are done by different companies, the dead port on move-in day becomes an argument about whose fault it is; when one company does both, there is no argument. So the first question to ask any structured cabling company in Dallas is who will support the network once the contractor has left. My answer is that I will, with my team behind me. What does structured cabling actually mean, from the drop to the IT room?

A drop is one cable from the IT room to one outlet, and structured cabling means every drop runs back to a central patch panel instead of daisy-chaining from device to device. Any port can then be connected to anything by moving a patch cord in the IT room, which is why a properly cabled office stays easy to change for years. The details that separate a good job from a cheap one:

  • Pathways: through framed walls at rough-in on new construction; through ceilings, existing conduit and surface raceway when renovating finished space. Runs are kept clear of electrical lines.
  • Termination: jacks at the outlet and the patch panel wired to the same standard at both ends, so a port never works on one side and not the other.
  • Testing: every run tested for wiring faults and length before sign-off, with the results handed to you.
  • Rack: wall-mount for most small suites, floor-standing when there is a server; mounted where there is power, some cooling and a lockable door.
  • Switch: sized for the drop count with room to grow, with Power over Ethernet so phones and access points need no separate power supply.
  • Firewall: a business firewall configured for your office rather than left at factory defaults, with the settings a cyber-insurance questionnaire asks about.
  • Wi-Fi: ceiling-mounted access points placed for coverage rather than convenience, guest and staff networks kept separate.
  • Power protection: a battery backup so a short outage does not drop the network or corrupt a server.

How does cabling fit the general contractor's schedule?

Two visits: cable is pulled after framing and before drywall, at the same stage the electrician runs power, and I come back after paint to terminate, test and build the IT room. Between those visits the contractor does not need to think about me. The electrician provides power to the IT room and the outlets and, on some projects, installs conduit or boxes for the low-voltage runs.

What I need from the contractor is a floor plan with the drop locations agreed, a rough-in date, and a date when the space is painted and clean enough to terminate. What the contractor gets is a single point of contact for everything network-related, including the internet installer, who otherwise tends to show up when nobody is expecting it and leave the circuit dangling in a hallway.

Just signed a lease in Dallas: what order do internet, cabling and computers go in?

Order the internet first, on the day the lease is signed, because it takes the longest: business circuits in Dallas office buildings can take weeks to provision. Cabling and the IT room happen during construction. Computers, phones and printers arrive last, once there is a network to plug them into.

  1. Week one: order the internet circuit, confirm the IT room location on the plan, count the drops, agree the cabling scope. Getting internet into a new office covers the circuit ordering.
  2. During construction: Cat6 pulled at rough-in, terminated and tested after paint, rack and network equipment installed.
  3. Before move-in: internet connected and tested, Wi-Fi up, phones provisioned, printers on the network.
  4. Move-in: workstations set up at each desk, accounts and email working, everyone able to print. The office move and new office IT setup service handles this end and can be quoted together with the cabling.

Done this way, the build-out and the IT setup overlap instead of queuing behind each other, and the move-in date does not slip because a switch was ordered late.

What is different about dental, medical, law and design office build-outs?

The drop count and where the drops go. A dental practice needs drops in every operatory for the chair-side computer and imaging, plus the server room, the front desk and the imaging equipment; a medical office is similar, with exam rooms in place of operatories. A law firm needs a drop for every attorney and assistant plus conference rooms wired for presentations and video calls. An architecture or interior design studio moves large project files between workstations and shared storage, so it needs Cat6 at minimum to every seat and a switch that is not the cheapest one available. The common thread is that these offices bill by the hour or the appointment and usually open on a fixed date with patients or clients already booked.

How is data cabling quoted, and what is not included?

By the job, not by a flat per-drop rate. The price is driven by the drop count, the size and construction of the space, whether it is new construction or a renovation of finished space, and what the IT room needs. A suite with twenty drops and a wall-mount rack is a different job from a clinic with sixty drops, a server and cameras, and the quote reflects that.

The quote includes cable, jacks, faceplates, patch panel, labour, testing, labeling and documentation, plus the IT room equipment when that is in scope. It does not include the internet circuit, which the provider bills, or electrical work, which belongs to the electrician. Can you fix the cabling in an office that already exists?

Yes, and it usually takes a day or two without disturbing the office. Re-terminating a patch panel, labeling what is there, adding drops for new desks or a new access point, and replacing a consumer switch with a business one are all routine. Afterwards, managed IT services keeps the network running month-to-month, with the same company that built it behind it and me still answering the phone.

Questions people ask about data cabling & it room setup

Do you do the cabling yourself or subcontract it?

I do not subcontract it. I count the drops on the floor plan, I am onsite when the cable is pulled, and my team and I terminate the jacks, test every run and build the IT room. Cross River Tech is a small company, which is also why I take on the projects a small office has, typically a single suite with a few dozen drops, rather than multi-floor build-outs that need a large crew.

Should the office be wired with Cat6 or Cat6a?

Cat6 is the right choice for almost every small office in Dallas. It carries a gigabit connection over the full run length and powers phones and Wi-Fi access points over the same cable. Cat6a costs more and is stiffer to work with; it makes sense for access points that will run the newest Wi-Fi standards at full speed or for design firms moving very large files, and I will recommend it when it applies.

How many network drops does an office need?

Plan two drops per desk, one per desk phone if you use them, one per printer or copier, one per conference room display, one for each Wi-Fi access point and one for each camera or door controller. It is far cheaper to add a drop while the walls are open than after, so I lean toward a few extra at reception, in the break room and in any room whose use might change.

When in the construction schedule does cabling happen?

On new construction and tenant improvements, cable is pulled after framing and before drywall, at the same stage the electrician runs power. Termination, testing and the IT room build happen after paint, when the space is clean. On a renovation of finished space, I use ceilings, existing conduit and surface raceway, and the work is scheduled around your business hours.

Do you handle the internet connection too?

I coordinate it. The circuit itself comes from an internet provider and is billed by them, but I help you order the right service early, tell the installer where the IT room is, connect and test the circuit when it is live, and configure the firewall behind it. Ordering on the day the lease is signed is the single best way to keep a move-in date, because provisioning can take weeks.

Can you also set up the computers, phones and printers?

Yes. Cabling is usually the first half of a new-office project and workstation setup is the second. I set up computers, accounts and email, provision desk phones, put printers on the network and make sure everyone can work on move-in day. That is the office relocation and new office IT setup service, and it can be quoted together with the cabling.
